With the children going back to school, our pharmacist gives some useful tips for treating head lice. We have a range of headlice treatments available to purchase through our online pharmacy and in our branches.
• Small bugs which commonly occur in children
• Grey/brown in colour
• Size of a sesame seed
• Can transfer from one individual to another through direct head contact
• Do not jump
• Live for 1-2 months
What are the symptoms of Headlice?
• They can cause an itchy scalp
• "Nits" can be seen which are the empty white egg shell casings of headlice
1 Hair should be wetted and dried to dampness
2 Apply conditioner to hair
3 Comb hair with a normal comb to remove tangles
4 Then comb hair with detection comb
5 Start combing at the roots and the length of the hair
6 Repeat this process several times tapping the comb on to a white piece of paper to dislodge any lice
7 Any lice found on the paper should be stuck to the paper by adhesive tape to show the nurse as proof of infection
8 Wash the comb under the tap
9 Detection combing is best performed on all family members to discover who is infected. Family members should not be routinely treated unless lice have been detected
10. To use as method of headlice eradication this process should be repeated everyday for two weeks making sure all headlice is eradicated
